Margaret Hu is Professor of Law, Director of the Digital Democracy Lab, and Faculty Affiliate with the Global Research Institute and School of Computing, Data Sciences & Physics at William & Mary. Her research focuses on the intersection of AI governance, national security, cybersecurity, cybersurveillance, constitutional, and civil rights. She is Author of "AI Law & Policy" (Aspen Publishing 2025) and Editor of "Pandemic Surveillance: Privacy, Security, and Ethics" (Elgar Publishing 2022). She previously served as Special Policy Counsel in the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice and as Senior Policy Advisor in the Obama Administration’s White House Initiative for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. She holds degrees from University of Kansas and Duke Law School.
